Founded in 2018, 222 East Society is a boutique design practice that specializes in high-end commercial interiors, and corporate strategy. We have extensive experience working with a wide range of budget and project sizes depending on your needs. At 222 East Society, we believe the design process begins and ends with the client and always strive to exceed their hopes and expectations. Our approach is both fresh and engaging, providing refined and sophisticated solutions with a focus on enhancing environments by creating comfortable, modern and ethereal spaces.  222 East Society collaborates with the industry’s highest caliber technicians, fabricators and artisans to create refined and beautifully crafted solutions for its clients.

Kelly D. Powell AIA | LEED AP | FAAR is the Founder of 222 East Society

Kelly is an architect whose career has been a unique exchange between practice, client representation and academia. Professionally, she has held key design and management positions within companies such as Davis Brody Bond, Perkins+ Will, and IA Interior Architects leading projects ranging from new offices for top tier law/finance firms to the interior planning of major educational, institutional, and commercial buildings winning numerous awards alongside the innovative teams.  In her capacity as Hudson’s Bay Company’s Director of Workplace Design + Special Projects, she led commercial planning efforts for the global retailer within its North American properties. During her tenure at HBC, she successfully led the design/build and relocation of its US Headquarters to Brookfield Place and the consolidation of its photography studios both in New York City.

Academically, she has taught at the University of Detroit-Mercy School of Architecture and The Georgia Institute of Technology within its Paris, France program. For her early academic research, she was awarded the highly prestigious Rome Prize in Architecture from the American Academy in Rome; being the first African-American to win the architecture fellowship in the organization’s 125 year history. Prior to that, Kelly was the Resident Design Fellow within the internationally renowned Detroit Collaborative Design Center.  

Kelly received her architectural degrees from the University of Michigan and the Georgia Institute of Technology.  She is licensed in the states of Michigan and New York and currently serves as the President of the Society of Fellows/American Academy in Rome and also sits on the Academy’s Board of Trustees.
